Signing Plea would be Pochettino’s third attempt at finding Tottenham’s ‘Plan B’

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly keen on Nice forward Alassane Plea.

Tottenham Hotspur are yet to make a new signing this summer, but Mauricio Pochettino is being linked with a whole host of potential additions to boost his squad.

Spurs are moving into their new stadium later this year and have Champions League football once again, meaning fans are expecting at least one major deal – but the latest name linked isn’t grabbing much fanfare.

Sky Sports report that Tottenham hold an interest in signing Nice forward Alassane Plea, with RMC Sport recently claiming that Spurs have already offered a deal worth £23million for him.

Plea, 25, hit 21 goals for Nice last season and has been impressing in France, though fans were hoping for a bigger-name addition in attack as Pochettino has a third stab at a ‘Plan B’ in attack.

Harry Kane is Tottenham’s clear first-choice striker after hitting 108 Premier League goals in 150 games, but Pochettino’s attempts to find a striker to cover for him in case of injury has not gone well.

In 2016, it was Vincent Janssen of AZ Alkmaar, who was a physical striker who could play with his back to goal and mostly played as a penalty box poacher due to his lack of pace, but Spurs failed to get the best out of the Dutchman and he spent last season on loan with Fenerbahce.

Last season, Pochettino switched up his approach by signing Swansea City’s Fernando Llorente, a tall, powerful striker with superb aerial ability – but Tottenham again didn’t play to his strengths, and the Spaniard may well leave this summer.

Plea is now completely different again, offering more pace in behind and technical ability on the ball, meaning Pochettino will be changing his approach once more in search of the striker to cover for Kane.

All three strikers are very different, and it suggests that Spurs aren’t quite sure what they’re looking for as cover for Kane, but if they do land Plea, they will hope to have got it right at the third time of asking.
