Sheffield United have landed Ben Woodburn on loan and the addition of the Liverpool youngster could boost their promotion bid.

Sheffield United have completed the signing of Ben Woodburn from Liverpool on a season-long loan.

Aston Villa had also shown interest in Woodburn, who flew back from the Reds’ pre-season International Champions Cup exploits in the USA ahead of a move.

Despite Villa joining the race, the Blades have been able to land the 18-year-old and this could be the final piece of the jigsaw to fire Chris Wilder’s side to promotion from the Championship this season.

United came close last term – their first back in the second tier of English football following five years in League One – and made a strong start before tailing off in the latter half of the campaign and eventually finishing tenth in the table and six points off the playoffs.

Yet the addition of Woodburn would see them add one of the most highly rated youngsters at Anfield to their ranks and someone who already has seven senior Wales caps and one goal, despite his age.

The forward can also play in a variety of positions in attack, adding some versatility to Wilder’s squad and filling the inevitable void left by fellow Welshman David Brooks’ departure to Bournemouth.

The Blades were perhaps a little naive at times in 2017/18, but with 12 months’ experience behind them and now the exciting Woodburn joining their ranks, getting back to the Premier League is a very distinct possibility.
