Leeds have been linked with a move for Tottenham striker Fernando Llorente.
Fernando Llorente has been linked with a move from Tottenham Hotspur to Leeds United and although the experienced striker would prove a huge coup for the Championship side, he would stunt the growth of a highly-rated teenager.
The Sun reported on Wednesday evening that Leeds are planning an audacious move to land the 33-year-old target man for a cut-price figure of just £4million, with the Spaniard’s contract set to expire at the end of the season.
Spain international Llorente worked with Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa during the Argentine’s spell in charge of La Liga side Athletic Bilbao, and Bielsa is also known to have a strong rapport with Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino.
There is no doubt that a player like Llorente would be an excellent signing for Leeds. His pedigree has seen him play for Juventus as well as winning a World Cup trophy – plus his physical attributes would certainly suit the Championship.
However, bringing Llorente to Elland Road would prevent Ryan Edmondson from getting any first-team football, with the two strikers much alike in how they approach the game.
Edmondson, 17, made his debut for Leeds last season and made his second appearance for the Whites in the 2-1 loss to Birmingham City this time around. He is highly-rated at Elland Road, so much so that he is a regular in the reserves.
The former York City striker is known for his physical frame and aerial ability, much like Llorente. But with first-team football already under his belt, Edmondson needs regular game time to continue his development.
Landing Llorente would boost Leeds’ promotion chances, but it would prevent Edmondson from having a look in. If the Whites do indeed land the Spanish forward, then Edmondson must consider a loan move away from Elland Road.
