Signing Drommel and Thill would be smart change of approach from West Ham

West Ham United are reportedly already lining up two summer signings.

According to The Express, West Ham United boss David Moyes could earn a two-year deal this summer – and he has already lined up two top targets for moves to the London Stadium.

Moyes has turned West Ham’s season around since replacing Slaven Bilic back in October, and the Scot’s results could see him earn a surprise stay in East London, months after his appointment was met with backlash.

Moyes recently told The Guardian that, if he does stay with the club beyond the end of the season, then David Sullivan will be taking a step back from the recruitment process, giving West Ham a new approach in the transfer market.

Now, The Express claim that Moyes has already identified two top targets for the summer if he stays, with Twente goalkeeper Joel Drommel and Metz playmaker Vincent Thill believed to be on his radar.

West Ham fans may not be overly impressed with the signings of two relatively unknown youngsters when the rest of the Premier League is splashing the cash, but targeting promising talents mixed in with proven quality has to be the blueprint for the Hammers.

In recent times, West Ham have got too far away from the strategy which brought them Winston Reid, Manuel Lanzini and Michail Antonio, and spent too much time investing big money – whether that be on wages or fees – in players with no re-sale value, such as Jose Fonte, Robert Snodgrass, Pablo Zabaleta and Javier Hernandez.

Sullivan’s approach has been found wanting, and with Moyes and co now taking the reins in the transfer market, he could look to Europe for talented young players to develop; far more exciting and business-savvy than watching ageing players play out their final ‘prime’ years at the London Stadium.

Goalkeeper Drommel has shown real promise in the Eredivisie and could be a goalkeeper to nurture behind veteran Adrian in the coming years after Joe Hart’s loan ends, whilst Luxembourger Thill, 18, has only played one Ligue 1 game this season, but has touted for a huge future for club and country.

Those young talents can grow and develop in East London, increasing in value over time rather than losing value as recent Sullivan signings have; and whilst it may not grab headlines, Moyes’ approach could be a smart change for West Ham.
