Eddie Howe has been speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of the Premier League clash between Newcastle and West Ham tomorrow.

Among other topics, the 44-year-old shared a positive update on Kieran Trippier, after he broke a bone in his left foot.

What’s the story?

Well, Howe revealed that the £12m man has undergone successful surgery to amend the problem, and he will now begin his recovery.

As quoted by the Chronicle, the Magpies boss said: “The update is Kieran had his operation yesterday and that went well, so that was good news.

“We hope to have him back before the end of the season. Obviously, it is a significant injury which was a big blow to us because he was performing so well.”

It’s good news, but in truth, it’s just the best of a bad situation for Newcastle – it is a devastating blow to lose Trippier, potentially for the rest of the season.

The 31-year-old was in fine form, and had only just become the first Newcastle player since Hugo Viana in 2003 to score a direct free-kick in consecutive Premier League games.

Those strikes helped Newcastle pick up six points, which could be invaluable come the end of the season.

Kieran Trippier can still benefit Newcastle

Aside from his obvious technical ability, Trippier has a fantastic mentality and a wise head on his shoulders.

As a result, the England international can still offer a lot to the Magpies, even behind the scenes.

As Jermaine Jenas told the BBC, Trippier isn’t someone who gets too carried away when things are going well, nor does he get too down when things are going badly.

Leaders like him are vital to have around during a relegation battle, even if they’re not actually out on the pitch.

Howe may only have got five appearances out of Trippier before his injury, although his presence alone at St James’ Park will still be hugely beneficial.
