Leeds United’s summer move for Vurnon Anita may be finally set to pay off amid Luke Ayling’s injury blow.

Leeds confirmed this week that Ayling has been ruled out for the rest of the season after sustaining an injury against Nottingham Forest.

Ayling’s injury is a big blow, but with Anita available, Leeds do not need to go and spend money.

Anita was a surprise addition in the summer after his Newcastle contract expired, and he has been under utilised at Elland Road.

He has had a spell at left-back during Gaetano Berardi’s injury absence, but right-back is Anita’s best position.

It was at right-back where he earned a call-up to Holland’s national team while playing for Ajax, and this is Leeds’ best bet to get the best out of him.

Leeds simply have not needed to until now, due to Luke Ayling’s consistency, but the former Bristol City talent’s misfortune will provide Anita with an opportunity.

So far he has yet to prove Newcastle wrong in not handing him a new contract, but now he has a big chance to step up and make a statement.
