Newcastle United suffered a third straight defeat over the weekend, as they were beaten 4-1 away at Manchester United on Saturday evening.

The Magpies went into the international break after defeats against Burnley and Bournemouth, but started well at Old Trafford when Dwight Gayle gave them the lead.

However, Anthony Martial headed home Paul Pogba’s cross, before Chris Smalling did the same from Ashley Young’s delivery to put the Red Devils 2-1 up.

Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku added second half goals to give Newcastle a 4-1 defeat, with fans far from impressed with the performance of defender Florian Lejeune.

The Frenchman, 26, joined Newcastle from Eibar over the summer, as manager Rafael Benitez forked out £8.7million for the centre back, as reported by The Guardian.

Lejeune suffered an injury against Tottenham Hotspur on the opening day of the season, and only returned in mid-October, but has now played six Premier League games this term – though his display against United was far from stellar.

The former Manchester City defender was slammed on Twitter by Newcastle fans, many of whom are calling for Lejeune to be dropped in favour of Jamaal Lascelles as soon as the Magpies skipper returns from injury.

That would see Lascelles partnering Ciaran Clark in defence again, with Lejeune on the sidelines as fans on Twitter compared him to former Newcastle defender Fabricio Coloccini.
