Signed by Rowett once already, could a Rangers return be on the cards for Lafferty if old boss gets Ibrox job?

The former Birmingham City boss has confirmed he’s held talks with Rangers about succeeding Mark Warburton at Ibrox.

A delay in Rangers’ appointment of Pedro Caixinha appears to have re-opened the door – if only slightly ajar – to alternative candidates.

Former Birmingham City boss Gary Rowett was surprisingly candid in an interview with BBC Sport this week, confirming he has held talks with the Scottish giants regarding a move to Ibrox.

And while it seems unlikely at this stage that Rowett will land the job ahead of Caixinha, the Englishman’s appointment is not completely off the table.

Were Rowett to replace Warburton at Rangers, it could spell good news for one former player, who admitted he’d be up for a return to Glasgow last year (Daily Record).

While some Rangers fans still haven’t forgiven Kyle Lafferty for walking out on the club post relegation to the fourth tier in 2012, many will recognise the quality he could bring to their side next season.

The Northern Irishman was among the top scorers Euro 2016 qualifying but hasn’t played a great deal of club football since, and looks to be on his way out of Norwich City at the end of his contract this summer.

Having signed for Rowett’s Birmingham on loan last season, it’s plausible that Lafferty will again be a target for the 43-year-old, whichever club he takes the reins at ahead of the coming transfer window.

And Rangers, whose top scoring striker, Kenny Miller, has scored just six goals this campaign, could be in more need than most.

Rangers fans – would you take Lafferty back at Ibrox next season?
