Pochettino favourite netted a double in Southampton’s win. Is he finding form at the right time for a move?

Jay Rodriguez produced his best performance in two years to help Southampton snap a losing streak and beat reigning champions Leicester City.

Rodriguez has suffered two seasons of injury hell after sustaining a cruelly timed serious knee injury in 2014 just after being called into the England squad.

He netted two goals in the 3-0 win over Leicester, displaying his physical prowess and goal poaching instincts.

Even shortly after his injury the former Burnley forward was linked with a whopping £20 million move to Tottenham by The Mirror, potentially rejoining former manager Mauricio Pochettino.

The complications Rodriguez experienced in his recovery sensibly saw teams steer clear of gambling for that sort of money, but the signs were yesterday that Rodriguez is finally getting back to approaching his best.

The timing is ominous for the Saints, with Rodriguez netted a double with a fortnight left in the transfer window, teams could yet be tempted to take a gamble.

Tottenham still lack quality back up for Golden Boot winner Harry Kane, and Rodriguez could be ideal.

His display yesterday had Tottenham fans wondering whether a potential deal can be done.

If any manager can tempt Rodriguez to move on just as he is finding form, then it is Pochettino.

Rodriguez told The Times just over a week ago that he is still in contact with his former Saints boss, who offers words of advice and encouragement.

After passing on the option to sign Saido Berahino, it would not be a surprise to see Spurs try to tempt Southampton into accepting an offer before this transfer window is over, assuming Pochettino was watching yesterday’s match.
