Leeds United have acknowledged Gaetano Berardi’s birthday on Twitter.

The Whites’ social media admin paid tribute to the long-serving Swiss defender, who turned 32 today.

Berardi, who joined Leeds in 2014, is the club’s longest-serving player but there continues to be a bit of confusion and mystery over his future.

The no-nonsense defender was ruled out for nine months in July after helping United to Premier League promotion.

But his contract officially expired at the end of last season, after signing a short-term extension to try and help get Marcelo Bielsa’s side over the line.

And quite a few Leeds fans on Twitter are calling for their popular player to be given a new deal.

Will Berardi get a new deal? Obviously this nine-month layoff makes things very tricky, but the club’s owner Andrea Radrizzani claimed recently: “We’ve prepared something to remind him he’s Leeds, he’s one of us whatever decision he will take.

“He knows he can count on me and I think you as well. Gaetano, thank you for your commitment.”

It remains to be seen what the Italian is referring to, but the fact that Leeds’ Twitter account continues to acknowledge Berardi – who wasn’t given a squad number for the 2020-21 campaign – might be significant.
