Said Benrahma looks too good for the Championship – but will Aston Villa bring him to the Premier League during the January transfer window?
It is performances like this which explain why former Brentford midfielder Sam Saunders was so keen to drop the ‘M Bomb’ when describing Said Benrahma to Sky Sports. He is, according to Saunders, ‘a little bit like Lionel Messi’.
And if you squinted hard enough, you’d be forgiven for thinking Barcelona’s number 10 had turned out for The Bees during their 3-1 win at QPR on Monday night.
Because Benrahma ran Mark Warburton’s defence ragged with a performance full of class and skill. There was a second goal of the season, slammed into the top corner from the penalty spot, and the QPR backline simply couldn’t live with arguably the Championship’s most unpredictable and technically gifted attacking force.
And Aston Villa fans were left drooling, watching on from afar.
According to The Express, Villa were hopeful of adding Benrahma to their ranks before the summer transfer window slammed shut, despite the possibility that Brentford’s £30 million price tag (TEAMtalk) would require a club-record bid.
Aston Villa have dropped too many points from winning positions this season already and it is not hard to imagine that a player with genuine star quality like Benhrama would be capable of turning those defeats into draws and those draws into wins.
