Tottenham Hotspur face unwanted interest from rivals Chelsea in defender Toby Alderweireld.

The Mirror report Chelsea are showing an interest in the Belgian, who could be sold this summer amid a contract stand-off.

Spurs have poor relations with Chelsea and they are expected to dismiss any approach out of hand.

This stems back to Chelsea’s attempts to sign Luka Modric in 2012, and their hijacking of their move for Willian in 2013.

But Spurs should be open minded, and try to see if they can finally land the Brazilian.

It should be the only condition of accepting a bid from Chelsea to lose a player they would regret parting with, to force the Blues into doing the same.

Willian’s future at Chelsea is uncertain amid interest from Manchester United, who The Sun report plan a £60 million swoop.

Given the criticism Chelsea received from selling Nemanja Matic to the Red Devils, they would surely sell to anybody but Jose Mourinho, even Tottenham… especially if they could land Toby Alderweireld in return.

Brazil's Willian (L) is marked by Colombia's Davinson Sanchez during their 2018 World Cup qualifier football match in Barranquilla, Colombia, on September 5, 2017.

Willian could earn more at United, and would have to take a slight reduction on his £120,000 per week wage to join Spurs, but the benefit of not having to uproot and being able to stay in London could make up for that.

Spurs have been strongly linked with Bordeaux attacker Malcom, but his fellow Brazilian forward Willian is a proven commodity in the Premier League.

He could take the pressure off Christian Eriksen with his ability to play in multiple positions in attack.

Both Tottenham and Chelsea would have to decide whether selling one key player to a rival to gain another is worth it.
