De Jong is a very talented and creative footballer, but the Dutchman has not been able to show his quality at Newcastle.

The 27-year-old’s time at St. James’ Park has been severely affected by injuries.

The attacker could make just 22 league appearances for the Magpies, of which only four were starts, as reported by BBC Sport.

Newcastle are playing in the Championship this season after getting relegated from the Premier League at the end of the 2015-16 campaign.

Rafael Benitez’s side lost their opening two Championship games this season, but they have won their last two.

The Magpies will return to action on Tuesday evening when they take on Cheltenham Town at St. James’ Park in the second round of the EFL Cup.
