But was it once again a case of Newcastle underperforming when they were favourites – while overperforming as underdogs against Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool?
De Jong and co missed big chances and fans will have wanted a lot more than a 1-1 draw against the bottom side in the Premier League. McClaren will hope momentum does not erode after the Villa draw – and that Newcastle can rediscover the energy levels they showed against Liverpool and at White Hart Lane.
