Last night’s defeat away to Wolverhampton Wanderers was very Arsenal, it has to be said.

The Gunners ended the game with only nine men after red cards for both David Luiz and Bernd Leno in either half.

Arsenal were well on top for most of the first 45 minutes and a brilliant goal from Nicolas Pepe had them cruising, but Ruben Neves equalised with a penalty on the stroke of half time against the run of play, after Luiz was adjudged to have fouled Willian Jose, earning himself a straight red card.

Joao Moutinho gave Wolves a 2-1 lead early in the second half, before another dismissal for goalkeeper Leno – who handled the ball outside the box – effectively killed the North Londoners’ chances of a comeback.

There was a huge element of controversy about Luiz’s red card, following television replays that the Wolves attacker was clipped by the Brazilian’s knee rather than it being a traditional foul.

Straight after the game, referee Craig Pawson was seen embracing Moutinho in post-match images which sparked fury among some Arsenal fans.

Here’s how they reacted to the snap:

Only Arsenal could lose this game 2-1 and get two players sent off.

At one point, it looked like Mikel Arteta’s side – who hit the post and had another chalked off VAR – could’ve scored plenty at Molineux, but events transpired against them and it’s very much one step forward but two back for the Emirates Stadium outfit these days.
