Newcastle United fans have been left fuming after Jamaal Lascelles suggested to the Chronicle that they needed to be more defensive against Manchester United.

Newcastle were beaten 4-1 by the Red Devils last weekend, as a flurry of late goals stopped them getting any points.

Newcastle had actually taken the lead early on when Luke Shaw put the ball in his own net.

But as the Magpies pushed for a second goal, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men staged a fight-back.

Lascelles has now suggested that Newcastle should have been more defensive and looked to protect their lead.

“We maybe should have realised we’re playing against Manchester United and kind of just shut up shop a little bit,” he said.

However, Newcastle fans have been left ‘sickened’ by their captain’s comments.

Newcastle supporters have been crying out for their side to take a more attacking approach, and they feel that Lascelles’ words just highlight the lack of confidence at the club currently.

Newcastle have begun their season by taking seven points from their first five games.
