Travis Kelce’s future with the Kansas City Chiefs is now a legitimate offseason storyline as his contract expires and questions swirl about whether he will re-sign or retire.

The veteran tight end remains one of the franchise’s most important figures, but he is no longer in his statistical prime.

That reality prompted one ESPN analyst to suggest Kansas City should resist sentiment and let him walk.

The comment quickly gained traction and even caught the attention of Chris Jones.

Chris Jones responds to Mike Tannenbaum’s Travis Kelce claim

Mike Tannenbaum, a former New York Jets general manager and Miami Dolphins executive who now works as an ESPN analyst, argued that Kansas City must think forward rather than backward when evaluating Kelce’s future.

“I would move on from Travis Kelce, and let me tell you why. When you’re in the front office, you have to project what a player is going to do, not what they’ve done,” Tannenbaum said.

“I’ve made that mistake countless times in my career, and Travis Kelce is a first ballot Hall of Famer, but when you watch him and make an honest and sober evaluation of his 2025 performance, clearly, his best days are behind him.

“We talk about the lack of explosive plays. If I were Kansas City, I would make the right, albeit difficult, decision to move on from Travis Kelce and probably get younger, faster, and more explosive at the tight end position.”

Jones did not offer a lengthy rebuttal. His response was direct, tweeting: “Shut up.”

The message reflected the loyalty Kelce commands inside the Chiefs’ locker room, especially from teammates who have won multiple championships alongside him.

Travis Kelce’s 2025 production shows decline but still real value

Kelce played all 17 games in 2025, finishing with 108 targets, 76 receptions, 851 receiving yards, and five touchdowns.

He also recorded five fumbles, an area that drew criticism during parts of the season.

The numbers are not at the level he produced between 2016 and 2022, when he routinely topped 1,000 yards and dominated defenses with explosive plays.

However, he remained a reliable option in critical situations and continued to demand defensive attention.

With his contract now up, the Chiefs must decide whether to offer a new deal or allow Kelce to weigh retirement. Publicly at least, Jones has made it clear which side he is on.
