The Shrewsbury Town boss is now sixth favourite to succeed Mick McCarthy at Portman Road.
Shrewsbury Town’s Paul Hurst has been cut to 8/1 to become Ipswich Town’s next manager with bookmakers, Sky Bet.
Hurst was 22/1 on Monday morning, but has since his odds shorten significantly in the wake of Mick McCarthy’s sudden departure on Tuesday.
The 43-year-old has taken Shrewsbury from the bottom of League One to the verge of automatic promotion in 18 months in charge at New Meadow, having previously led Grimsby Town back to the Football League.
And the fact his achievements have been delivered on a limited budget will likely appeal to Ipswich owner Marcus Evans, who has a reputation for being somewhat tightfisted.
Despite his sudden surge up the betting, Hurst is still only sixth favourite for the Portman Road position, after Danny Cowley (13/8), Alan Pardew (11/2), Paul Cook, Simon Grayson (both 6/1) and Shefki Kuqi (7/1).
One of Hurst’s Shrewsbury players, Jon Nolan, was recently linked with a summer move to Ipswich, among other clubs.
