Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Kevin Wimmer could be the ideal singing for Southampton.
Tottenham’s Kevin Wimmer
Tottenham defender Kevin Wimmer has struggled for first-team opportunities under Mauricio Pochettino this term, and admitted his current frustration to Austrian media outlet Kleine Zeitung.
He is yet to make a Premier League appearance for Spurs this season, with his only outing coming in their League Cup tie against Gillingham in September.
The 23-year-old moved to White Hart Lane last summer from Cologne for a fee believed to be in the region of £4.3 million, but it will now be vital for his development to play regular first-team football.
With Tottenham’s defence looking so strong at present, and the emergence of promising youngster Cameron Carter-Vickers, his future in North London is very much up in the air, and with this in mind, he could be the ideal January transfer target for Southampton.

Despite the Saints having a very strong defence themselves, their strength in depth is questionable.
Add to that the fact that Jose Fonte is approaching the twilight years of his career, and there could be genuine worth in making a move for the Austrian.
Wimmer could form a long-term partnership with Southampton’s Dutch star Virgil van Dijk, and the two would complement each other perfectly with the Austrian’s ball-playing skills being the ideal foil for van Dijk’s aerial prowess.

Wimmer’s contract with Spurs does not expire until the summer of 2021, and with his prime years yet to come, he would certainly not come cheap, should Claude Puel’s men attempt to sign him.
Much will depend on how Pochettino sees Wimmer contributing to Spurs’ challenge on all fronts this term, and if he doesn’t deem him as an important part of his plans, a move to the South Coast would seem the ideal solution for all parties concerned.
