Rangers’ long winning run finally came to an end at Fir Park, but Motherwell’s boss believes the league leaders were lucky not to lose all three points.

It finished 1-1 as Devante Cole’s first-half goal was cancelled out by Rangers substitute Cedric Itten in the final 20 minutes, but Graham Alexander felt the Swiss forward was offside when he headed home Borna Barisic’s cross.

The point moved Rangers 21 points ahead of Celtic at the top of the Premiership, while the home side climbed above Hamilton Accies at the summit.

Rangers had 73% of the possession but struggled to break Well down, and in his second match since taking over Alexander felt his side were denied a memorable victory by unfair means.

Speaking on Sky Sports following the match, the former Scotland international said: “The players deserve all the credit, they took on our game plan, I thought we were the better team in the first half.

“Our structure in the second half, we defended really well and the frustration is the goal, I don’t believe it should have counted.

“I didn’t see it at the time but I’ve seen the stills and the pictures – the lad looks offside when the ball comes in.

“But that’s not within our control, all I can try and concentrate on is what’s in our control and that’s the structure of the team, the motivation, the togetherness of everyone at the club.

“And that, for me, was top notch today.

“First half especially, we frustrated them. And not in the way that we just banked in our box, we tried to press them from the front, they had the ball but we controlled where they went with it.

“And I couldn’t ask for any more from the team.

“But for a cross and an offside header we take three points so the players have got to take great confidence from that.”
