Nuno Espirito Santo’s January priority is reportedly to strengthen Wolverhampton Wanderers’ striker options.

According to a recent report from the Birmingham Mail, Nuno has made signing a new striker his priority for the January transfer window as Wolves look to capitalise on their brilliant position in the Championship.

Wolves appear to be on the verge of running away with the division this season, and Nuno appears to be hoping that a new forward will be the factor that will see them across the line and into the Premier League.

The Birmingham Mail reports that he has identified three potential striker targets – with Dwight Gayle of Newcastle United, Derby County’s Chris Martin and Lewis Grabban, who is on loan to Sunderland from Bournemouth, on the shopping list.

But perhaps one youngster’s most recent performance for Wolves’ under-23 just hints that Nuno may be able to save the club millions and actually not sign a new striker next month.

For a while it appeared that Wolves’ under-23 side’s game against their Southampton counterparts on Monday was going to see the home side claim a comfortable win on the south coast as they took a 2-0 lead inside 10 minutes.

However, Wolves turned the game on its head, and Donovan Wilson played a key role in the turnaround, with the 20-year-old scoring a hat-trick as the visitors went on to win 4-2.

With Leo Bonatini in such fine form at the moment, it would certainly not be a bad idea if Nuno started to hand Wilson – who scored against Southampton’s first-team in the Carabao Cup earlier this season – more opportunities. He clearly has an eye for the goal, and may perhaps be able to help Wolves get themselves over the line.

Wolves travel to Sheffield Wednesday in their next game in the Championship on Friday.
