Wolves lack punch up front and Nottingham Forest striker Britt Assombalonga looks like he is in need of a move.

Wolves’ efforts to drag themselves out of the relegation battle are not helped by their goalscoring troubles.

They have netted just 40 in 34 games, and sit in 21st position, albeit with two games in hand on teams around them.

Turning an eye to next season, Wolves will need to sign a striker, whichever division they find themselves in.

Summer deals for Paul Gladon and Jon Dadi Bodvarsson did not work out, and they may be sensible to look at a player they wanted to sign in 2014, Britt Assombalonga.

Manager at the time Kenny Jackett admitted to the Express and Star he was keen on signing Assombalonga from Peterborough, but Wolves were simply outpriced.

After a difficult two years, Assombalonga is looking like a move away from the City Ground could be to his benefit.

He was woeful in midweek in the loss to Brentford, and his form in 2017 has been poor.

It was unfortunate that he missed almost the entire season to injury a year ago, but at the start of this season he looked fantastic, and was back scoring goals at a prolific rate, just as he was before his knee trouble.

He has nine goals from 14 starts this season, and nine further substitute appearances, but has no goals in his last six games.

Forest signed the impressive Zach Clough in January, and bringing in Ross McCormack on loan was a sign they felt they needed reinforcements.

Just this week former forward Gary Birtles told of his fears Assombalonga could be sold in the summer, and defended his recent form, speaking to the Nottingham Post.

Wolves have the finances to make Forest a tempting offer, bankrolled by Chinese investors Fosun International, who have already put up big money to sign Ivan Cavaleiro and Helder Costa.

Forest’s owner Fawaz Al-Hasawi has shown several times he will cash in on his players if the price is right, and Wolves might be wise to test him over their 24-year-old centre forward.
