Wolverhampton Wanderers could reportedly face a battle to keep hold of Ruben Neves.
Wolves fans would have been forgiven for worrying about the prospect of losing Ruben Neves from the moment that he put pen to paper on a contract at Molineux.
Neves joining Wolves was a massive coup and he helped inspire their promotion-winning campaign last term. Even now in the Premier League, keeping Neves appears as if it could become a monumental task for Nuno Espirito Santo’s men.
And given that interest, Neves’ latest comments – which have reported by the Express and Star – should perhaps leave Wolves fans slightly concerned that they could face an even tougher task keeping hold of their talisman as he insisted that playing in the Champions League is his dream.
“I played against some of the best players in the world and it helped me to grow as a player. Juventus’ stadium was the best I played at, also Dortmund and Bayern Munich had a good atmosphere.”
In fairness, it is no surprise that a player of Neves’ calibre is eyeing a spot in the Champions League. As he alluded to, he has had a taste of that level and is undoubtedly good enough to go there again.
And just because Neves wants to play in Europe’s top competition, it does not mean that he will look to leave Wolves anytime soon. It looks to almost be a pipe dream at this stage, but the progress that Nuno’s men are making suggests that it may not be too long before they find themselves in the discussion regarding Premier League teams who can challenge for a European spot.
Wolves playing in the Champions League looks a long way off, but stranger things have happened in England’s top flight over the last few years, and few teams in the division have shown as much ambition recently as the Championship title holders.
