Wolverhampton Wanderers tried to sign Scott McTominay from Manchester United in the summer – and now Leeds are trying their hand.
With Wolves heading into the festive period top of the Championship, they are gearing up for the January transfer window aiming to sign one or two players to put the finishing touches on their promotion chasing squad.
As reported by The Express and Star, a right-wing back and a centre-forward are two positions Wolves are desperate to strengthen. But they surely will not sit back if Manchester United are willing to let Scott McTominay leave on loan in the New Year.
According to The Sun, Leeds United are among a number of Championship clubs hoping to convince United to let one of their most exciting young talents in years leave on loan. The 21-year-old, who has forced his way into the first-team this season and made three Champions League appearences, is very highly rated by Jose Mourinho, who sees him as an immediate part of his first-team squad.
Leeds have loaned countless players from their northern enemies in recent years but McTominay would perhaps be the best of the lot.
And though Wolves’ name has not cropped up just yet in these latest reports, it may only be a matter of time. The Express and Star claimed that the Black Country side entered talks to sign McTominay on loan on transfer deadline day in the summer but United decided to keep him in the first-team picture instead.
A tall and technical central midfielder, McTominay would fit in perfectly at Wolves and Mourinho will know that he would be in safe hands under his compatriot Nuno at Molineux.
And with Wolves looking odds-on for promotion, surely winning a league title would not do McTominay any harm as he aims to foster the winning mentality needed to succeed at United.
So if Leeds get any indication that United could be open to offers, Wolves should not wait around.
