Should West Ham United make a move for Crystal Palace defender James Tomkins on transfer deadline day?
According to a report in The Daily Mail earlier this month, Crystal Palace manager Frank de Boer could be prepared to listen to offers for James Tomkins.
Tomkins joined Palace from Premier League rivals West Ham United in the summer of 2016 for a transfer fee reported on the Eagles’ official website to be worth £10 million.
The 28-year-old defender, who can operate as a centre-back or as a right-back, made 23 starts in the Premier League last season and has made two starts in the league so far this campaign.
The former England Under-21 international is a good defender, and if he is not wanted by Palace manager De Boer, then West Ham should attempt to sign him back.
Tomkins started his professional club football career at West Ham and made over 200 league appearances for the London club.
While the 28-year-old is not exactly a great defender, he is someone who would help the Hammers this season and shore up the backline.
Slaven Bilic’s side have lost all three of their Premier League matches so far and have conceded as many as 10 goals.
The Hammers’ main problem so far this season has been in defence, and it is this department that West Ham need to address.
If Tomkins is not in the plan of Palace manager De Boer, then West Ham should make an attempt to re-sign the defender at least on a season-long loan deal.
