The striker is in fine form for Cologne and has previously been linked with West Ham United.

Anthony Modeste

According to a report from Le10 Sport last summer, West Ham United made contact with German side Cologne in a bid to sign their striker Anthony Modeste.

Nothing came of the talks, but given the Hammers’ ongoing need for additional fire power, what chance Slaven Bilic will try again in the close season?

If he does he is unlikely to be the only one, with Modeste in blistering form for Cologne, scoring 19 goals in 24 matches for the Bundesliga side.

That is the kind of form that gets the great and the good of the game sitting up and taking notice, even if he is now 28.

West Ham’s initial approach came after Modeste had scored 18 goals in 36 matches for Cologne last season, but having already surpassed that total this time round negotiations are not going to be any easier.

While Modeste has a long-term contract at Cologne and is clearly enjoying his football there, West Ham would be wise to at least try to finally get their man.

After all, he may feel he has unfinished business in England after a disappointing spell at Blackburn Rovers and if he is going to make the move, this summer could be the perfect time.
