Wolfsburg are in the Bundesliga relegation playoff so should West Ham look to sign striker Mario Gomez if they go down?

For West Ham United, signing a new striker is a priority this summer as both Andy Carroll and Diafra Sakho struggle to maintain their fitness.

Both Michail Antonio and Andre Ayew have filled in upfront, with varied success, while Jonathan Calleri’s loan resulted in just one goal. Therefore a proven goalscorer is a definite target for Slaven Bilic.

Well perhaps the Hammers manager should be keeping a close eye on developments in the Bundesliga, with Wolfsburg playing Braunschweig over two legs to try and avoid relegation to the second tier.

If the club were to drop out of the German top flight then maybe West Ham should once again look to sign Mario Gomez, a forward that according to the Sun they were close to securing last summer before he eventually moved to the Volkswagen Arena.

Gomez has already admitted earlier in 2017 that he will decide his Wolfsburg future at the end of the season, but if they were to go down then surely the Germany international would leave?

What should interest the Hammers further is that, according to ESPN, there is a clause in the three-year contract the 31-year-old signed last summer that enables him to leave should Wolves not qualify for European football.

Gomez – who has won titles in Germany, Turkey and the Champions League – scored 16 Bundesliga goals in 2016/17 despite Wolfsburg’s struggles and with 30 strikes in 70 caps for his country as well, could prove to be quite the coup for Bilic and his East London side.
