Zlatko Junuzovic was linked with a move to West Ham United back in 2016, and is set to become a free agent this summer.
With the relationship between the West Ham fans and owners seemingly at an all-time low, the club’s hierarchy are facing a hugely important summer transfer window where they surely need to show the kind of ambition that will give the fans some hope that they plan to head in the right direction.
Big names and big fees will send a message to the fans, but the board must not abandon the pursuit of one or two bargains along the way that should leave the squad in a much better position heading into next season.
One player that the Irons board should consider is a player that they have previously been linked with and is now set to be available for nothing.
Kicker reported in 2016 that Zlatko Junuzovic was on West Ham’s radar, and transfermarkt now suggests that he is out contract with Werder Bremen at the end of this season.
The 30-year-old should not be viewed as a marquee signing for the club, but David Moyes or whoever the manager is at that stage should certainly have a look at adding him to a squad that has not always looked the most threatening going forward.
Junuzovic has four assists in 16 Bundesliga games this term, while he managed a quite remarkable 30 assists across the previous three seasons in the top flight, so would definitely bring some creativity to West Ham’s side with his array of passing.
It is not the time for the owners to make free transfers and then proclaim how good a deal they have done, but if West Ham can address some issues within their squad by landing one or two bargains, that has to be considered smart if they take advantage by splashing out also.
Signing the attacking midfielder may be a risk as he has not been as influential this season, but given what he has shown over the last few years, West Ham should certainly make a fresh move for Junuzovic this summer.
