Should West Bromwich Albion boss Alan Pardew try and sign Arsenal’s Mathieu Debuchy for a second time?
One big positive to come out of Arsenal’s Europa League campaign so far has been the resurgence of Mathieu Debuchy.
The French right-back has shown some excellent form and some Arsenal fans might argue that he even deserves Premier League opportunities over an inconsistent Hector Bellerin.
But he won’t get them and Debuchy, who has 18 months to go on his contract in North London, was heavily linked with a move away from the Emirates last summer and speculation is bound to mount once again when the Janaury transfer window opens in January.
If Arsenal make him available, should West Bromwich Albion make a move?
The 27-cap France defender is a man who Alan Pardew knows well after bringing him to Newcastle United back in 2013 and the new West Brom boss should consider a reunion.
Debuchy reminded Arsenal fans of his attacking ability in Tuesday’s 1-0 win over West Ham in the League Cup, delivering a series of beautiful crosses which Salomon Rondon, for instance, could really benefit from.
He might not be the 27-year-old that Pardew signed for the Magpies in January 2013, but Debuchy can still be an asset for the relegation-threatened Baggies.
They could really do with his experience and quality in the second half of the campaign.
Speaking to The Chronicle, Pardew raved about the former Lille star in 2013, saying: “He’s the only one that really put out more than I would have liked him to.
“But that’s Mathieu for you – he puts his life on the line every time in every game he plays.”
And West Brom are going to need players like that if Pardew is to stave off the threat of relegation. Albion need some attacking players too, but committed players like Debuchy wouldn’t go amiss either and reuniting with him wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world.
