Should West Bromwich Albion let Wolverhampton Wanderers sign Bournemouth’s Benik Afobe?

According to Sky Sports, West Bromwich Albion and Wolverhampton Wanderers are going head-to-head over the signing of Bournemouth striker Benik Afobe.

West Brom fans will ask why Alan Pardew is challenging Wolves for a number nine, given that they are in two different divisions, but is it good news if the Baggies lose the race?

Afobe, according to The Birmingham Mail, is valued at around £10 million by Bournemouth and the former Arsenal man just isn’t the player who is going to solve Albion’s goalscoring problems and fire them to safety.

West Brom have only scored five goals in the 10 games since Pardew replaced Tony Pulis and they are firmly in the relegation battle, sitting 19th in the Premier League table, one point from safety.

Problem is, there is no evidence that signing Afobe would lead to an increase in goals, and therefore points.

The 24-year-old has only managed 10 Premier League goals in 63 games and although he might offer other strengths, he won’t bring goals and nothing else matters for relegation-threatened Albion.

Losing to Wolves, a Championship club, in the race to sign someone wouldn’t be a good look for West Brom, but it would force Pardew to identify other targets and surely there’s better, proven top-flight goalscorers around.
