Should West Brom gamble and target Garry Monk appointment?

West Bromwich Albion look to be in serious trouble in the Premier League, and Alan Pardew is reportedly fighting to keep his job.

Despite overseeing a decent run of form in January, there appears to be a chance that Alan Pardew’s days at West Brom could be numbered with The Sun reporting this week that the Baggies hierarchy plan to give the manager two games to keep his job.

West Brom appear to be in serious trouble of being relegated from the Premier League, and it is safe to say that the supporters are starting to fear the worst with seven points separating them from the team immediately outside the bottom three.

Whether Pardew is actually as close to the sack as The Sun suggests remains to be seen, but the Baggies board would certainly be forgiven for wondering what they can still do to help the team stay up, and another change of manager may well have been a suggestion that has cropped up at some stage.

Should they decide to sack Pardew, perhaps West Brom should consider taking a gamble by looking to appoint Garry Monk – despite the fact that he lost his job at Middlesbrough earlier in the campaign.

Monk has experience of leading a side away from trouble after getting the job at a time when their position was precarious, having guided Swansea to safety in his first job as a manager.

West Brom’s situation is a lot worse than the Swans’ was back then, but they are certainly not out of the equation just yet and have a run of games coming up where they can target a decent number of points.

And if relegation does happen, they would have a manager in place who nearly guided Leeds to the play-offs after the Whites spent years in mid-table rarely flirting with a potential top six spot, and he would probably argue that he did not get long enough to make the most of his spell at the Riverside Stadium.

West Brom do not want to get caught in the cycle that sees managers keep teams up and quickly lose their jobs at the start of the next season as it ultimately tends to result in relegation eventually anyway, so taking a gamble and appointing a manager – who may be able to keep the side up this term – and has the potential to be a very good boss in the future may prove to be a step forward whatever division they find themselves in next season.
