Derek McInnes seems to have suggested he has hit a glass ceiling at Aberdeen – should West Brom make a swoop?

Derek McInnes, Manager of Aberdeen looks on prior to the Scottish Premier League match between Celtic and Aberdeen at Celtic Park on May 13, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Derek McInnes has admitted that Aberdeen are never going to be able to compete with Celtic for the Scottish Premiership title if things in the division remain as they are.

For the fourth successive season since McInnes was named Dons manager back in 2013, the club have finished as runners-up to the Glasgow side.

Aberdeen players celebrate at the final whistle as they beat Celtic 1-0 to take second place in the league during the Scottish Premier League match between Celtic and Aberdeen at Celtic...

“I would love £30m or £40m and try to deliver first place,” the 46-year-old told the BBC.

“We can’t deliver first at the minute, I don’t think, if Celtic keep doing their job well – and they are doing their job well.”

Has he hit a glass ceiling?

McInnes turned down two managerial roles in 2017 to remain at Pittodrie, with the Daily Record reporting how he rejected Sunderland before the 2017/18 campaign had started and then Rangers in December.

However, at the time both clubs had financial issues away from the pitch; although the Black Cats are set for a takeover following their relegation from the Championship to League One.

While it seems unlikely McInnes would drop down to the third tier of English football having had so much success in Scotland and Gers have recently appointed Steven Gerrard, another club strongly linked with the former Bristol City boss by the Mirror were West Bromwich Albion.

The Sun reports that the Baggies will appoint a new manager this week, with Darren Moore leading the race alongside Brentford’s Dean Smith after a strong stint as caretaker which saw him named Premier League manager of the month for April.

Yet do these latest comments from McInnes suggest that he feels he has done all he can at Aberdeen and West Brom should consider bringing back someone who spent three years in their first team as a midfielder between 2000 and 2003?
