Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with another forward, this time from Turkey.
According to the Sun, Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Beskitas striker Cenk Tosun and sent scouts to watch the player in action for Turkey against both Iceland and Finland this month. But should Spurs be wary of signing the player given the struggles of another once-prolific front man in the form of Vincent Janssen?
After all, Tottenham brought the Dutchmen to White Hart Lane on the back of a 32-goal campaign for AZ Alkmaar, and yet he ended last season with only six goals in 39 appearances for Spurs, with just two strikes coming in the league. In contrast, he has already scored two and set up two more in just four appearances on loan in Turkey.
While Janssen had taken the Eredivisie by storm, Tosun is doing similar in the Turkish Super Lig, finding the net 74 times in 195 appearances in that competition.
That is an impressive record, as is his 54 goals in 127 matches in all competitions for Beskitas. But as with the Netherlands, the Turkish top flight is in stark contrast to the Premier League and, at 26, it would be expected that if Tosun was good enough he would have moved on by now.
Janssen was swiftly cast aside despite arriving when he was just 22, so unless Tosun hits the ground a hell of a lot quicker, bringing in a 26-year-old who has made a career banging them in in Turkey may be a risk Tottenham chairman Daniel levy has no intention of taking after being burned once already.
Paying £17million (BBC) for Janssen did not pay off, at least not yet, so next time Tottenham spend big on a striker expect them to look to a league with a little more quality.
