Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly interested in finding Mousa Dembele’s long-term successor, so perhaps they should look to Southampton.

According to a report from Sky Sports, Tottenham have started identifying players that they want to consider as potential successors for Mousa Dembele at some stage in the future.

Sky Sports name Matteo Guendouzi and Geoffrey Kondogbia as players that Spurs currently have their eye on, but perhaps one player’s performance during Southampton’s draw with Arsenal at the weekend should tempt Mauricio Pochettino to take a more serious look.

Since Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg arrived at St Mary’s for £10.2 million from Bayern Munich last summer, he has tended to go under the radar, but his recent performances have suggested that the eight-figure fee the Saints paid for him will prove an absolute steal.

He was exceptional in the recent 4-1 win over Everton and followed that up with a brilliant display in the middle of the park as the Saints pushed the Gunners and came within a handful of minutes of bagging a hugely impressive win.

At 22, Hojbjerg – who has played alongside Christian Eriksen for the Danish national team, and will surely be determined to earn his place in the side ahead of next year’s World Cup – is surely only going to get better as he earns more experience in the Premier League.

It is too early to suggest that the former Bayern man is ready to fill the void that Dembele will leave behind in the coming years, but based on his two of his most recent displays, Tottenham could surely do a lot worse than consider keeping a keen eye on his progression in the coming weeks and months as his recent form certainly hints that there is a special footballer potentially emerging.
