The former Bayern Munich man is available on a free, and there are lots of reasons why he’d represent a smart piece of Tottenham business.
With Tottenham Hotspur still yet to make a signing this summer, the only Premier League club in such a position, Spurs fans will surely be wondering how Mauricio Pochettino and Daniel Levy will look to plug perceived gaps in the squad, while also improving the existing options.
And one of the areas of concern is at centre back, where Tottenham have been closely linked to sealing a deal for Juan Foyth in the last week. However, it now looks as if the Argentine is going to land somewhere else in Europe when he departs South America, according to Sky Sports.
Holger Badstuber in action with Oliver Torres
With Spurs possibly looking to employ three at the back next season, and first choice defensive backup Kevin Wimmer reported by Sky Sports as making noises about departing for first team football, it is clear that central defence needs to be addressed before the transfer window closes.
And one available option to come in ticks a whole bunch of boxes. Free agent Holger Badstuber left Bayern Munich this summer after eight years with the first team. Injuries had restricted his appearances in more than one of those seasons, but the 28-year-old managed to rack up some game time on loan at Schalke in the spring, suggesting he has put those concerns behind him.
Labelled the best left-footed centre back in Germany by former boss Louis van Gaal, in comments reported by Goal, Batstuber’s signing would allow Wimmer to depart, with the club’s defensive ranks arguably boasting a more talented and more experienced option in his place.
With five Bundesliga titles, a Champions League win and 33 caps for Germany to his name, it is no surprise that the Mirror has reported the likes of Swansea and Manchester City as keeping tabs on Badstuber, but Tottenham should register their own interest in a player who will be eager to make up for lost time whoever he joins.
Could Badstuber replace Kevin Wimmer at Spurs?
