Tottenham Hotspur should perhaps consider a bargain move for the West Bromwich Albion defender this summer.
After an encouraging season where Tottenham arguably took another step forward in their quest to win silverware on a regular basis, Mauricio Pochettino must feel that this summer could be a huge one for Spurs where they need to get some big deals done and some marquee names through the door.
Given that they have never been the biggest spenders in the division, it could certainly be argued that they also need to have an eye on potential bargains in the market that will ensure that they have the funds to pursue their main targets during the coming months.
And perhaps there may be few better bargain deals for Spurs to consider than a £2.5 million bid for Ahmed Hegazi following West Brom’s relegation from the Premier League.
Hegazi was an ever-present for the Baggies this past season and was undoubtedly one of the most impressive players in the West Brom side throughout the campaign, proving particularly impressive in the club’s 1-0 win over Pochettino’s side earlier this month.
He obviously would not be a replacement for Toby Alderweireld if he leaves this summer, but Tottenham would do incredibly well to find a better defender available for that sort of price. And there is no reason why he could not simply be brought in to improve the depth and act as cover for the first choice options. His form this term suggests that he would be a very credible understudy.
It would not be a deal that captures the imagination, but it could certainly be a fantastically-shrewd move from Spurs that barely touches the funds that Pochettino will be looking to use this summer.
