Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a move for the soon-to-be free agent.

According to a recent report from the Gambling Times, Tottenham Hotspur are considering a summer swoop for Max Meyer, but will they have to make another big call to ensure the 22-year-old gets the game time he craves?

Meyer is out of contract this summer, with his Schalke deal running down and a new challenge seemingly inevitable but, with his pick of clubs given his innate talent and his potential, the young German is not going to move to a side where he needs to fight tooth and nail just for a few minutes on the field.

Given the midfielders currently at Tottenham’s disposal, that could be the case if Meyer moves to North London this summer. However, Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino could force some additional sway if he opts to sell the ageing Mousa Dembele and replace him with a player eight years his junior.

Dembele is a fan favourite at Tottenham, however there have long been suggestions that he could be on his way out of the club this summer, with the London Evening Standard suggesting he may have already pulled on a Spurs shirt for the last time.

That remains to be seen but, given Dembele’s injury problems, Pochettino may be wise to bid him farewell and offer Meyer the Belgian’s place in Tottenham’s starting XI.

The Germany under-21 international is a star in the making and, for nothing more than a signing-on fee, Tottenham would be wise to act fast.
