Newcastle, Everton and Burnley are eyeing a move for Plea, but should Spurs join the race?
Tottenham Hotspur will be on the lookout for a new striker this summer after it was reported Fernando Llorente will be allowed to leave the club – and they could do a lot worse than joining the race for Nice’s Alassane Plea.
The Telegraph claims 33-year-old Llorente will be allowed to depart “for the right price” after failing to provide adequate back-up to main striker Harry Kane. Vincent Janssen remains on loan, but he is likely to face a similar predicament.
Spurs need a new striker who will be happy to act as second choice to Kane, with Mauricio Pochettino unlikely to defer from his tried-and-tested system of 4-2-3-1 to incorporate two strikers.
CalcioMercato claim Everton, Newcastle United and Burnley are all interested in Nice striker Plea, who has amassed an impressive 17 goals this season as well as adding six assists in 43 games.
The uncapped Frenchman has managed a very commendable tally in a side that struggle for goals. In 32 league games, Nice have managed just 43 strikes as they sit in seventh and behind the chasing pack.
Plea is a different striker to the likes of Llorente and Janssen, offering an abundance of pace but also the strength and aerial prowess that the out-of-form duo are more renowned for.
Perhaps the best thing about Plea, is that he can also offer cover out wide. The problem Spurs have encountered with Llorente and Janssen is that they suffer from a lack of game time when called upon to lead the line in Kane’s absence.
But Plea can dip in and out of the side on the wing, allowing him to hit the ground running when needed as the north Londoners’ focal point. All in all, Plea would be a superb signing if Spurs can tempt him to move to Wembley.
