The Manchester city centre-back would be an interesting option for Tottenham Hotspur this summer.
Spurs fans are beginning to become frustrated at their side’s lack of activity in the transfer market so far this summer, with all of their main rivals for the Premier League title spending heavily.
Mauricio Pochettino deserves great credit for the manner in which he has transformed Tottenham into genuine title challengers, in such a short period of time following his appointment as manager in 2013.
The Argentine will ultimately be judged on his ability to guide his side to major honours, however, and in order to do that, the Lilywhites board quite simply must back him to the hilt during the next few transfer windows.
Worryingly for the north London outfit though, the only real concrete transfer news thus far has been regarding potential outgoings, with the Mirror reporting that Pochettino is ready to sanction Kevin Wimmer’s exit from the club.
Manchester City’s Eliaquim Mangala
If the Austrian is eventually allowed to leave, Spurs will obviously have to bolster their defensive ranks, and an interesting option for them could be Manchester City centre-back Eliaquim Mangala.
The 26-year-old Frenchman joined City from Porto in the summer of 2014, for a fee believed to be in the region of £32 million according to BBC Sport, but he has failed to establish himself as a regular starter at the Etihad.
Whilst there will be plenty of Tottenham fans who are sceptical to the idea of their club making a move for the former Porto man, Pochettino has become renowned for getting the best out of players who have previously been underperforming, and Mangala could prove to be a huge asset to Spurs.
Standing at 6ft 2in tall, and powerfully built, the City centre-back has the perfect physique with which to succeed in the English game, and given a consistent run of games, he could surely prove his doubters wrong.
Mangala still has two years remaining on his current deal with City, but following the Daily Mail’s report that he has been omitted from the squad for their pre-season tour to America, Pep Guardiola would surely be open to sanctioning his exit from the Etihad.
And Pochettino should make an attempt to bring him to north London. Although it would be a risky move, it could be one that yields great dividends for Tottenham over the course of the next few years.
