Tottenham Hotspur reportedly wanted the Spanish midfielder in 2016.

Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with Andre Gomes recently.
According to The Telegraph, Spurs will challenge to sign the Everton loanee on a permanent basis when the January transfer window opens.
Gomes has lit up the Premier League since joining on loan from Barcelona and it’s probable that Tottenham and Everton won’t be the only suitors.
With that in mind, it’s wise for the North Londoners to identify alternative targets – and what a signing Saul Niguez would be.
The Atletico Madrid midfielder has been linked with Manchester City, but Pep Guardiola explicitly stated that he wasn’t interested in him this week [Fox Sports].
That opens the door for other clubs and Tottenham should certainly renew an interest.
The Mirror claimed three years ago that Saul – valued at £81 million according to CIES – was on Mauricio Pochettino’s radar and that should definitely still be the case.
Mousa Dembele is unlikely to be a Tottenham player come next summer and although Harry Winks is a big talent, is he the next-level midfielder that Pochettino will want? Arguably not, but Saul, who only turned 24 last month, is and if Gomes isn’t viable, Pochettino should go for the Spaniard.
