Divock Origi’s loan move to Bundesliga side Wolfsburg from Liverpool last summer gave the striker a chance to shine in a side pushing for European qualification. Fast forward a year later, he is embroiled in a relegation dogfight.

The 23-year-old failed to lead Wolfsburg anywhere near their pre-season expectations and a 16th-placed finish saw Wolfsburg have to fight for their top-tier status with a two-legged play-off against Holstein Kiel.

Origi saved some face by scoring and assisting in the 3-1 first-leg win, before Wolfsburg won 1-0 away to maintain their place in the Bundesliga. But his long-term future remains to be undecided.

Goal.com claim Liverpool will permanently sell two of Origi, Daniel Sturridge and Danny Ings, meaning the former Lille star could leave Anfield. It should prompt Spurs into action, who were linked with a move last summer.

The Telegraph claimed last summer that Spurs were interested in Origi, before they signed Fernando Llorente from Swansea City. The latter has struggled, and is likely to be moved on this summer.

Similarly, Vincent Janssen has managed only five goals on loan Fenerbahce and he could join Llorente in leaving Spurs, meaning Mauricio Pochettino’s side need a new striker to act as back-up to Harry Kane.

Though Origi has hardly set the world alight with his form at Wolfsburg, he is still very young and has scored 12 goals in 51 Premier League appearances – 30 of which have been substitute appearances.

Boasting speed, strength and the unwavering desire to find the back of the net, Origi offers a different kind of style to Kane up front and would certainly prove a better alternative to Llorente and Janssen.

Spurs, then, should reignite their interest in the reportedly transfer-listed Liverpool forward this summer, as they look to improve upon this season’s third-placed finish next time around.
