Tottenham Hotspur have an exciting young right-back but have hardly used him this season.

With the season drawing to a close, Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino may be wondering if he made the right call spending big on Serge Aurier at the expense of Kyle Walker-Peters’ development in North London.

As reported by the BBC, Tottenham signed the Ivory Coast international for £23million last summer, but fast-forward a few months and one wonders if Spurs would have been better off saving their money and promoting from within.

Aurier has been hit-and-miss at best this season, while Walker-Peters has impressed whenever he has been given the chance.

The 21-year-old may have only made eight appearances in all competitions, but Tottenham fans are united in their belief that he is a first-team regular in the making.

In contrast, Aurier causes panic at least once every match and, while he has plenty of experience, it is hard to think Tottenham are better off with the Ivorian in their ranks than they would be if they put all their faith in Walker-Peters.

With Kieran Trippier also at the club, this season could have been the one when Walker-Peters followed in the footsteps of Harry Kane and Dele Alli and made a first-team spot his own, slowly and effectively developing his game without the pressure of being first-choice right-back.

Instead he has been relegated to a third-choice bit-part player, watching on as a player who cost £23million puts his teammates in trouble far too often for a 47-capped international.

The Tottenham youngster has time on his side and will make it in the end, however on this occasion Pochettino should have saved the cash and allowed the Englishman to prosper. He could have then put the extra money into signing a striker with the ability to hold his own against Harry Kane, not another flop in the form of Fernando Llorente.
