Tottenham sold Clinton N’Jie to Marseille in the summer on a permanent basis.

Strasbourg's French defender Dimitri Foulquier (L) vies with Olympique de Marseille's Cameroonian forward Clinton Njie (R) on January 16, 2018 at the Velodrome stadium in Marseille,...

Clinton N’Jie left Tottenham Hotspur in the summer of 2017 with fans thinking the speed machine is just another example of a prospect that failed to live up to his potential.

The 24-year-old was loaned to Marseille last term for the entire season, and although he manage just four goals in 23 appearances, the French giants obviously noticed something special in the 21-time Cameroon international.

That has proven to be the case this season, after Marseille landed the versatile attacker on a permanent basis in July, N’Jie has begun to show the kind of talent his potential suggested.

The former Lyon star has notched six goals in 11 Ligue 1 appearances this season, after scoring the first of Marseille’s 2-0 win over Strasbourg on Tuesday night to push his side into third place in the table.

Featuring for 490 minutes of Ligue 1 action this season, N’Jie has an eye-catching goalscoring ratio of finding the back of the net once every 81.7 minutes – an alarming rate that is beginning to strike fear into his opponents.

It is a record that is within a whisker of Paris Saint-Germain superstar Edinson Cavani, who has amassed 20 strikes in as many top-tier outings for Unai Emery’s side.

Harry Kane of Tottenham Hotspur during the Premier League match between Tottenham Hotspur and Everton at Wembley Stadium on January 13, 2018 in London, England.

Uruguay international Cavani has played a lot more minute than N’Jie, clocking up 1623 minutes. But with 20 strikes in that time, he has a very similar ratio to N’Jie with a goal every 81.2 minutes.

With a record as good as one of the best centre-forwards in World football, surely Spurs should regret the sale of N’Jie as Harry Kane’s back-up striker Fernando Llorente has managed just two goals in 22 outings.

Even Kane’s ratio is not as good as N’Jie’s league form, with the Spurs number 10 notching 20 in 22 top-flight outings, at a ratio of one every 93.4 minutes. Surely, then, Spurs should have kept N’Jie in north London and given him more of a chance.
