Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly plotting a summer bid for Alfie Mawson as they seemingly brace themselves for Toby Alderweireld’s exit.

Toby Alderweireld #4 of Tottenham Hotspur passes the ball in the second half against Roma during the International Champions Cup on July 25, 2017 at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey.

With the Daily Mail reporting earlier this month that it is looking increasingly likely that Toby Alderweireld will leave at the end of the season, it appears that Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino needs to prioritise signing a new centre-back in the summer – and another report seemed to suggest that Alfie Mawson was likely to be high on the wishlist.

The Sun suggested that Spurs were amongst the teams keen on signing the Swansea centre-back, but had been told by the strugglers that they would need to pay £40 million to get a deal done.

It is not clear how Tottenham have responded to the prospect of paying that amount, but after his latest performance, perhaps Pochettino would be wise to reconsider his plans if he does remain keen on the 24-year-old.

Mawson is not the first and will not be the last player to go to the Etihad Stadium and endure a torrid afternoon dealing with Manchester City’s mouthwatering attacking options, but it was still an incredibly underwhelming performance from the defender as the Cityzens put five past Carlos Carvalhal’s side.

The defeat will not see Swansea judged too harshly. But Mawson’s display should be setting the alarm bells off for Spurs given how much Swansea are demanding for a summer deal.

If Pochettino is looking to replace Alderweireld, he should be looking at some of the best defenders around. And after Sunday’s game, it is difficult to argue that signing Mawson would be an upgrade on what they already have – and thus, going anywhere near Swansea’s £40 million valuation would be a big gamble for Spurs despite the obvious talent he possesses.
