Should Tottenham keep Vlad Chiriches at right back after Hull success?

Tottenham used Romanian defender Vlad Chiriches at right back against Hull – but should he stay there?

It seems a familiar formula, but it’s one that – somehow – continues to work for Tottenham Hotspur.

Just like their 2-1 win against Aston Villa earlier this month, Tottenham went 1-0 down away from home, before staging a second half comeback and winning the game in the dying seconds after their hosts were reduced to ten men.

This time, it was Hull City who were on the receiving end of a bizarre deja vu, as Christian Eriksen placed the ball into the bottom corner in injury time to hand Spurs all three points at the KC Stadium.

It was a much needed result for manager Mauricio Pochettino, who has come under huge pressure in recent weeks with Spurs struggling to find any sort of momentum.

The win over Hull saw one interesting tactical decision from Pochettino. With Spurs trailing at half time, he made the decision to substitute yellow carded right back Eric Dier and send on Romanian centre back Vlad Chiriches.

The 25-year-old hasn’t impressed for Spurs so far, and has even been linked with a January exit from the club, with Serie A sides interested in a deal.

In an unfamiliar role at right back, Chiriches actually impressed. He was steady defensively but the real change came in how he attacked. He was more expressive than Dier, playing the ball into his attacking players quickly and operating the flanks in the final third.

Gaston Ramirez’s sending off did make things easier for Spurs to get on the front foot, but Chiriches’ display certainly impressed a number of Spurs fans on Sunday.

Supporters are eager to see Chiriches given a run at right back whilst Kyle Walker steps up his return to the team, and it would allow Eric Dier to play at centre back again – which appears to be his true position.

With reports suggesting that Inter, Juventus and Roma will make a move for Chiriches in January, he may have just earned himself a stay of execution at White Hart Lane after this impressive display in a new role.
