Tottenham Hotspur boast the second-best defensive record in the Premier League this season but could arguably still do with some additional depth.

With the Daily Mail reporting last week that Antonio Rudiger wants to leave Roma and has his heart set on a move to England, it may surely be wise for Tottenham to consider joining their Premier League rivals in the running for his signature.

Spurs have been tremendous at the back this season – only Chelsea have conceded fewer goals in the top flight this term – but Mauricio Pochettino must surely consider adding more depth to his defensive options this summer as he looks to lead them to the next level.

Kevin Wimmer could end up moving on this summer (via London Evening Standard), leaving Eric Dier as the only other option available to Pochettino beyond Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen.

It appears that it will certainly not be easy to land Rudiger despite his desire to play in the Premier League. According to the Mail, Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United have been scouting the German, who Roma want around £30 million for.

But with Tottenham falling in the group-stage of the Champions League and seemingly destined to come up short in the top flight for the second year in a row, it is surely time for the club to show some real ambition in the transfer market and compete with their main rivals for some of Europe’s brightest stars.

The 23-year-old has already established himself in two of Europe’s biggest leagues, has played in the Champions League and has made a handful of appearances for the current world champions, but should also continue to keep getting better for several years to come.

With him battling Vertonghen and Alderweireld for a place in the team, Tottenham would surely have the kind of defence that would be able to battle at the business end on several fronts, and poaching from right under their rivals’ noses would arguably make a statement regarding the direction the club is heading in.
