The Spurs striker is touch-and-go for the Champions League clash as he recovers from a hamstring injury.

Harry Kane of Tottenham Hotspur goes down holidng his leg during the Premier League match between Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool at Wembley Stadium on October 22, 2017 in London, England.

Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane is pleading with manager Mauricio Pochettino to pass him fit for Wednesday’s Champions League showdown with Real Madrid, according to The Times.

The England international has missed Tottenham’s last two matches with a minor hamstring strain.

Pochettino suggested to The Times that he is optimistic over Kane’s fitness, but would the Argentine be taking an unnecessary risk by gambling on his talisman’s powers of recovery?

The visit of Madrid to Wembley is a showpiece of an occasion that Kane, wanting to test himself against the best players in the world, will be desperate not to miss. But it is not a must-win game.

One win from their remaining three Group H matches will be enough for Spurs to progress to the knockout stages, unless either Borussia Dortmund or Apoel Nicosia win all three of their own matches.

Tottenham can afford to drop points against the Spanish champions, but the eight-point gap that leaders Manchester City have opened up means that Premier League points are more precious.

The Tottenham Hotspur team walk off dejected after the Premier League match between Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford on October 28, 2017 in Manchester, England.

A fully fit and well-rested Kane would be a huge lift to the Lilywhites for Saturday’s match with rock-bottom Crystal Palace, and the North London derby with Arsenal after the international break.

It is difficult to see Spurs beating Madrid without Kane, but then it is impossible to see them chasing down City if the back-to-back Golden Boot winner aggravates his injury after being rushed back too soon.
