Do Tottenham Hotspur really need Barcelona Andre Gomes or would he represent a waste of money?
According to a report from Mundo Deportivo, Tottenham Hotspur have made contact over Barcelona man Andre Gomes.
The Spanish publication claims that Spurs have touched base with the 24-year-old’s agent Jorge Mendes regarding a January move for the out-of-favour star.
Tottenham were heavily linked with him in August but Barcelona’s failure to sign Philippe Coutinho meant that the Catalans retained his services.
The report from Mundo Deportivo also claims that Juventus are interested and you wonder if the North Londoners should consider passing on what would be a big-money move.
The Portugal international has started 24 Primera Division and Champions League games for the Blaugrana since joining in a big-money move from Valencia in the summer of 2016, but would he have a much better shot at regular first-team football under Mauricio Pochettino at Spurs? Arguably not.
Harry Winks only enhanced his burgeoning reputation in the Lilywhites’ 1-1 draw at Real Madrid on Tuesday. At 21, Winks would represent another big obstacle standing between Gomes and regular football, with Pochettino also boasting Mousa Dembele for that central midfield role.
The Daily Mail’s Live transfer blog on deadline day back in August reported that the Premier League side would have to pay £40 million for him, but Winks’s emergence this season means that Gomes is not a vital addition.
They should let Juventus have him.
