Tottenham Hotspur should consider keeping Moussa Sissoko, at least until January.
By virtue of the fact that Moussa Sissoko didn’t score a single goal for Tottenham Hotspur after joining for £30 million last summer, it’s probably fair to say that it doesn’t, at the moment, look like being a memorable union between the two parties.
Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino, however, claimed via The Mail at the weekend that the 27-year-old is in his plans for next season, despite a lot of speculation about his future.
Today, it was reported in Turkey that Trabzonspor were keen on signing him on loan and that a deal could be struck next week. If true, Tottenham should back out of negotiations and hang on to him for a little while longer. It could be worth their while.
Sissoko is only a Tottenham player now because of an exceptional European Championship with France last summer, in which the then-Newcastle United player – who had been relegated a month earlier – put himself in the shop window with a series of fine performances.
Quite where that player was last season, nobody quite knows. What we do know, however, is that there’s a World Cup in 11 months and if Sissoko is as motivated to reach Russia as he was to leave Newcastle for a big club then the Lilywhites could benefit in a big way.
He underperformed last season, but there is still plenty of talent there and a motivated Sissoko might well remind his detractors of that fact next season. Plus, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy will recoup a lot more of that £30 million fee next summer if Sissoko improves.
A loan deal isn’t ideal for Tottenham. There seems to be little to lose in keeping him until January at least, giving him another six months to prove his worth, and a lot to gain if he does.
