Tottenham Hotspur star Toby Alderweireld is one of the best defenders in the Premier League.
Alderweireld has been on the books of Tottenham since the summer of 2015 when he joined from Spanish club Atletico Madrid for a transfer fee reported by The Daily Mail to be worth £11.5 million.
The 28-year-old defender, who has since developed into a key player for Spurs, has a contract with the North London club until June 2019, according to The London Evening Standard.
According to The London Evening Standard, Tottenham have the option of extending that deal by a further year which would also activate a £25m release clause in the summer of 2019.
The same publication reported back in March 2017 that Alderweireld wants a new deal with Tottenham which would see his wages double from £50,000 per week.
The former Ajax star, though, has stated that there has no progress in talks over a new contract with the Premier League club.
“No news that I know of so nothing…zero,” Alderweireld told Sky Sports.
Alderweireld’s comments could be worrying for some Tottenham fans, as he is one of the best defenders in the Premier League and is a key player for the team.
Given the centre-back’s performances and importance, a weekly salary of £50,000 does not appear to be too much.
While the defender does deserve a new deal, it must also be kept in mind that Alderweireld still has two more years left on his current contract with Tottenham.
Negotiations over new contracts do take a lot of time, and Spurs fans should not unnecessarily worry at the moment, although it would make sense for the two parties to come to an agreement by the middle of next season.
